FAQ

Quantity Surveying, questions we are asked

What does a quantity surveyor do?

A quantity surveyor manages the cost of a construction project: estimating and cost planning before work starts, running the tender process, valuing work each month, pricing variations, and agreeing the final account at the end.

When should I appoint a quantity surveyor?

As early as possible, ideally at concept design. The greatest influence over final cost exists before drawings are fixed, and falls away quickly once construction begins.

Do you work for developers or for contractors?

Both, though never on the same project. We act for developers, private clients, government bodies and contractors, and confirm the basis of appointment in writing at the outset.

What is a bill of quantities?

A measured schedule of every item of work in a project. It lets contractors price the same scope on the same basis, makes tenders comparable, and provides the measurement basis for valuing change later.
